FAQs
Sizing & Fit
How do I find the right size?
Start with the size you wear in other boots and shoes. Most boots run true to size unless noted under Sizing & Fit, but fit can vary between styles, even within the same brand. Please see our size guide. Not sure? Call us at 1-833-253-1060 and we’ll help you choose.
How do I convert men’s sizes to women’s sizes?
The difference depends on the type of footwear, so here is the conversion for this one. Find your usual size in one column and read across.
How should work boots fit?
- Heel: snug, with only a little lift when you walk.
- Toes: room to wiggle, with no pressure from the safety toe on the tops or ends of your toes.
- Width: the ball of your foot should sit comfortably at the widest part of the boot without bulging the sides.
Try boots on with the socks you’ll wear to work, and later in the day, when your feet are at their largest.
Do you carry wide widths?
Yes. Many of our boots come in more than one width, such as M (medium), W (wide), XW (extra wide) and 4E. The widths available for this boot are the buttons above the sizes.
How long does it take to break in work boots?
It depends on the boot. Many feel good right away, while stiffer leather boots can take a week or two of regular wear. Wear them for a few hours at a time at first, with good work socks.
Before you break them in, check the fit indoors. Returns and exchanges must be new and unused, so wear them around the house on carpet or a clean floor first. Once boots have been worn outside or on the job, they can’t be returned.
Safety Ratings
Steel, composite or alloy toe: what’s the difference?
- Steel toe: the traditional choice. Very durable, but the heaviest, and it conducts cold and heat and sets off metal detectors.
- Composite toe: non-metal. Lighter than steel, doesn’t conduct cold or heat, and won’t set off metal detectors. The toe box can be slightly bulkier.
- Alloy toe: aluminum or titanium. Lighter than steel and thinner than composite, which often leaves more room in the toe, but it is still metal.
Boots rated to ASTM F2413 meet the same impact and compression standard whichever toe material they use.
What does ASTM F2413 mean?
ASTM F2413 is the U.S. performance standard for protective footwear. A boot’s label lists which protections it was tested for:
- I/75 and C/75: safety toe impact (75 foot-pounds) and compression (2,500 pounds)
- Mt/75: metatarsal protection
- EH: electrical hazard
- SD: static dissipative
- PR: puncture resistant
The Specs and Safety Features tabs show which of these apply to this boot.
Does my job require safety-toe boots?
OSHA requires protective footwear where there is a risk of foot injury from falling or rolling objects, objects piercing the sole, or electrical hazards. Your employer decides which protections your job needs, so check with your supervisor or safety manager for the ratings you’re required to wear before you order.
Do I need EH or static dissipative (SD) boots?
They do opposite jobs, so one can’t stand in for the other:
- EH (electrical hazard) boots insulate you, giving secondary protection if you accidentally contact a live circuit. Common for electricians and utility work.
- SD (static dissipative) boots let static electricity drain safely to the ground. Used around sensitive electronics or flammable materials.
What’s the difference between waterproof and water resistant?
Waterproof boots use a membrane and/or sealed seams to keep water out, even when you stand in it. Water-resistant boots shed light rain and splashes but will eventually let water in. If you work in wet conditions every day, choose waterproof.
How much insulation do I need?
Insulation is measured in grams; more grams means a warmer boot. As a general guide, 200g suits cool weather or high activity, 400g suits cold weather with moderate activity, and 600g and up suits very cold conditions or long periods standing still. This boot’s insulation, if any, is listed in the Specs tab.

Care & Warranty
How do I care for leather work boots?
- Brush off dirt and mud after use, and wipe the leather with a damp cloth.
- Condition the leather regularly so it doesn’t dry out and crack. We carry leather care products such as boot oil.
- Let wet boots dry at room temperature, away from heaters, fires and direct sunlight, which can crack the leather and damage the soles.
When should I replace my work boots?
Replace them when the tread is worn smooth, the sole is separating, or the upper is torn. Replace safety-toe boots after any significant impact or crushing load, even if they look fine, and if the safety toe is exposed. EH protection also weakens as the outsole wears down.
Is there a warranty?
Warranties vary by brand and aren’t available on every product. They generally don’t cover abuse or normal wear from overuse. For warranty questions, call us at 1-833-253-1060.
